Market Commentary: Tuesday 27th October

Anthropic IPO Filing Revives AI Optimism: Global stocks advanced after Anthropic PBC filed for an initial public offering, renewing optimism around the AI trade following recent doubts and a volatile week. Asian equities rose, led by technology shares in South Korea and Japan, although Nasdaq 100 futures later declined 0.4%. Funding for further AI development remained a key driver of sentiment, with Meta Platforms seeking to raise up to $95 billion for AI investment. Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon are due to report earnings later this week.

Oil Holds Near $116 as Peace Talks Remain in Focus: Brent crude remained near $116 a barrel after recovering losses triggered by reports that international officials had travelled to Tehran to revive peace talks in the Middle East. Markets remain sensitive to developments in the region and their potential impact on global energy supplies.

Markets Await Federal Reserve Decision: US Treasuries were little changed, with the 10-year yield trading at 4.98%, as attention turns to tomorrow’s Federal Reserve decision. A rate hold is largely priced in, but investors will be watching for reassurance from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh that the central bank remains committed to tackling inflation as elevated oil prices continue to add to price pressures.
